A speech that you give without any preparation is called "improvised". These can be the most difficult kind of speeches, but also the most fun!

Next class we will learn how to improvise with some tips and lots of practice.

Watch the video of an American guy named Tam deliver an improvised speech. The teacher gives him the topic "Pokemon" and he has to make a speech. The topic then changes during his speech to "Pikachu" then "spells" and the teacher keeps changing the topic. Click HERE to watch then tell me what you think in the comments.

Let's try it next class!

  1. Hi!Matt!

I enjoyed giving the group presentation in the class yesterday:)

I watched the video. I thought Tam was good at giving this kind of speech because he did not pause when he was given a new topic.

I think it is difficult to try not to pause and keep talking when I given a new topic one after another, but I will try my best!

  2. Hi, Matt.

Did you enjoy our group presentations? I enjoyed having and listening them.

After I watched the video, I thought that it was tough to make an improv speech, because the speaker have to keep talking whatever the topics are. But the speaker in that video did well in his speech, and he seemed to enjoy it.

    See you next week,

  3. hello, Matt!

    An improvised speech is enjoyable!!
    I enjoyed Tam's speech.
Well..though it sounded like an entertainment rather than a speech:)

I think I can do it well if the topics are related to daily life. But maybe I can't if serious issues are given as a topic.

  4. Hi,matt!!

My impression of Tam's speech is only one thing. He seems enjoyable, and this makes me enjoyable too!!I think this is an important thing.Even if topic is difficult, but if the speaker seems enjoyable, people will enjoy his presentation.

So next class I want to enjoy an improvised presentation with everyone.

  5. Hi, Matt!

Tam seemed to be enjoying giving an improvised speech very much. His classmates who were listening to him were laughing happily and they were also enjoying his speech, I guess.

I felt like giving a speech, too, though it seemed a bit tough.

    See you!

  6. Hello, Matt.

Tam's improvised speech was great. There was no pause, and he was always making gestures. Besides, he and the audience seemed to enjoy his speech.

I think it will be fun to make such a speech, but it seems to be difficult for me.

  7. Hi, Matt :)
I was so happy to hear that you had enjoyed the group presentations!

I watched the video, and it looked very fun!!!
It must be difficult for us to make well-organized speeches if they're 'improvised speeches'...
And also, we have to do them in English, though Tam was doing it in his mother tongue...

But! I think improvised speeches are more enjoyable as they are difficult to make!

Looking forward to the next class!

    See you soon,

  8. Hi,Matt:)
How was, or how is, your weekend?

Improvised speech seemed a little hard, because we (maybe me only!!) tend to think that "a speech" should be prepared. But I believe THAT is the point.

The good point of Tam's improvised speech was that he himself was enjoying and trying to entertain his classmates. So, it sounded not like a speech, but like a performance.

I wish I can make a good improvised speech. Also, I want to hear YOURS. Looking forward to the next class!!See you!!

  10. Hi, Matt!

The video was very short, but I thought both he and the audience enjoyed the speech very much.

He has a sense of humor and the gesture is also interesting.
The way of speech is very American, I think.

I want to try it. And if possible I want to make the audience laugh.

  11. Hi Matt!!!

The guy in the video was so funny!!!
But the improvised speech seemed difficult.
I wonder if I could do that in front of the whole class. The "ting!"s were very fast.
    Anyways, I'll do my best.
    See you on Tuesday!

I enjoyed his speech and I think his speech is very funny!

I want to make a speech like him.

  13. Hello.
A speech without preparation sounds fun, but it is hard to make it. You have to speak and think what you speak next at the same time.
I thought it is worth mastering it although it needs training much.

  14. Hi, matt!

I watched the video, and I thought his speech was very good and fun.

But, I think I can't make a speech like him because improved speech is very very very difficult for me...

  15. I found topics change more rapidly in "improvised" than I had expected. It'd be much more difficult if we have to talk in one topic for a few minutes, but since topics are given one after another, we can evade a difficult topic by speaking on the spur of the moment.

  16. Hi, Matt

I enjoyed his speech. He is great speaker, he made me laugh a lot of times.

I know "improvised" is very tough, because we cannot prepare. I think it is very important to keep speaking, so I will do my best not to make silence.

    See you

  17. Hi, Matt!
The guy was good at speaking and they (and I, of course) enjoyed his speech.
An improvised speech looks like fun.
I think, however, it really tough to make such kind of speech even if I use Japanese.
Besides, I'm poor at speaking English...but I try my best!

    See you tomorrow.

  18. Hi, Matt!

I think it is very difficult to make an improvised speech.
So, I was surprised to see Tam do it very well.
I don't have confidence, but I'll try to do my best.

    See you!

  19. Hi, Matt!

The speaker in the video made other people laugh many times. I think it's difficult because we can't have enough time to prepare. So, he is great!

I will try to speak continuously and not to put pause.

    See you tomorrow!

  20. Hi, Matt!

    "Improvised" seems so difficult!
But he was able to talk about the topics
as soon as he got them.

What is more, he was good at not only finding the topics but also entertaining the audience.

I wish I could talk like him...

    Anyway, I'll do my best.

    See you tomorrow!

  21. I think Tam is really smart, consequently really funny guy. Tam must always makes jokes and makes other people laugh.
This kind of speech must be very tough, but if we succeed, it will be a very enjoyable speech.

  22. Hi Matt!!

I watched the video. I didn't exactly understand what Tam said, but I saw him enjoying his speech.

I think his good point was to feel relaxed and involve people, though he was moving too much.

"Improvised" may be difficult for me, but I will keep in mind that I shouldn't be so nervous about speech and enjoy it!!

    See you tomorrow!!

  24. Hi Matt!

Tam's way of speaking is really enjoyable, I think.
He is good at getting his audiences to have fun.
    He made a good speech.
But, probably Sho will make more interesting one, so I recommend you to bring a video camera to record his speech, and let's upload it to You Tube.^ω^♪

    I can't wait Sho's speech!
    See you tomorrow.

  25. Hi, Matt!

I watched the video and enjoyed Tam's speech. His way of speaking is really attractive! But he talked fast so I couldn't understand some parts of speech. I'd like to be good at hearing English. What should I do to be so?

    I'll enjoy next class!
    See you tomorrow.

  26. I thought Tam was very good at making speech on the spot. He never stopped speaking and that amazed me most. This may be a very difficult thing to do even in Japanese! I'm not sure whether I can do it myself but I will try.

  27. Hi, Matt!!
    I watched the video!!

This was the first time I saw an improvised speech. My impression of it was that it is really hard. It seems like you have to keep on talking and you don't have any time to prepare for it. If the given topic is not related to our daily lives, it might be harder.

This might be a difficult type of speech for me, but I'll try my best!!

    See you!!

  28. His speech was kind of too fast, but his skill of speech was good.
If I were asked to make improvised speech I would not be good, even if it is Japanese.
    See you at the class.

  29. Hi, Matt!

I enjoyed the video, but I lost all the confidence in my speaking ability. I cannot imagine my making such an amusing improvised speech. Anyway, I will do my best.

  30. Hi Matt!

I watched the video and I thought it is very difficult to make an improvised speech.
In the speech, he was so expressive that the audience seemed to enjoy it.
So I will try to be expressive when I make a speech if possible.

    See you next class!

  31. Hi, Matt!

Tam is so funny! Although I couldn't catch all contents of his speech, I think he is very good at talking. He rarely stoped talking!

Unfortunately, I'm not good at thinking and talking immediately, but I'll do my best!

    See you soon!

  32. Hi, Matt!

His talking speed was too fast for me, but I was surprised at his skill to entertain people.
He often changed the tone of his voice and expressed things by using his body. I thought them very effective.

    See you tomorrow.

The video, though I could hardly understand what the speaker said, looked very interesting.
I'm very looking forward to the next class doing this. In fact it'll come just in several hours!

  34. Hi, Matt.

I watched the video. Improvised speech seems to be very difficult, but he was great because he didn't stumble and tried to entertain the audience.

I'm worried whether I can do this, but I'll do my best:)

  36. I think it is better to try not to consider during improv but to feel and say words spontaneously. When you think carefully you cannnot follow the speed.
Besides, he made many gestures. It is useful because his words are not clear(for there is no time to think about it).
