Fillers and Gestures

We will practice using gestures and fillers in our next class. Please watch these two videos and write your reaction in the comments.

VIDEO 1 : He talks about eye-contact and gestures. What did you learn from this?

VIDEO 2 : Does President Obama use too many fillers in his speech?

  1. Hi, Matt!
I'm so sorry for having foggotten the last homework…

I watched the two videos, and both were interesting.

    VIDEO 1
I'm not good at eye contact, but I'll try to look at people sitting at right side, left side, front and also back, in the eyes.
I also don't good at using gesture. However, I knew gesture is important to emphasize something or impact on people, so I want to use gesture SMOOTHLY.

    VIDEO 2
Certainly, President Obama use a lot of fillers, but I ddon't know how long his speech was, so I can't judge whether he used too many fillers, or not from only this video.
And I also think it is not so easy to speak without fillers, even if he is president, in conversations. I may use much more fillers in such circumstances.
But I want to make a speech next time without someone saying "You use too many fillers!"

I'm looking forward to next class!

  2. Hi Matt! I'm not forgetting to do my HW this time!

Okay so first,I watched the video 1 and I think I really really have to remember to make an eye contact. As you pointed out before, I'm only looking at the people near me.For the man in this video talks about an eye contact first, I guess it's a crucial part of making a speech.

Secondly,I'd never really noticed Obama said "Uh" so many times.Come to think of it,saying Uh! spoils the whole speech. After noticing his using many fillers, I found his speech a bit annoying. No offence!

  3. Hi Matt!
I'm sorry I forgot to do my homework last time...

    I watched the videos.
Talking about the first one, I thought it is important to remember not to concentrate on just one side of the audience when we give a speech. Also, I agree to the speaker's opinion that when we use a gesture it should be natural to grab people's attention.

Talking about the second one, I thought Obama was using too many fillers in his speech. But I thought it is better using fillers than becoming silent.

  4. Hi Matt!!

    VIDEO 1
I learned that when I use gestures, it is important to use both hands not only right hand. In addition, gestures let people know what is important in a speech and they should be done naturally not like a robot.

    VIDEO 2
I thought that Obama used fillers many times. However, I feel editing may have made me think so. I can't judge from only this video.

  5. Good evening, Matt!!!!!!!!♪♪

    VIDEO1
Our eye contact should be given to every person listening to the presentation. We should move our hands to do gestures in a very natural way. Gestures should be used to emphasize the important parts in the presentations.

    VIDEO2
Certainly I thought he used fillers many times, but he did it in a natural way. I did't feel it being strange!
Almost every day I hear him speaking on TV but I have never felt his way of speaking strange :)

  6. Hello.

    Video 1
I learned what is the most important thing in speech is `naturalness' and `fluency'. I have to speak fluently, make eye contact naturally, and gesutre smoothly. However theory is one thing and practice another. SO I want to practice hard in your class and get the skill.

    Video 2
Apparently, he uses too many fillers. However, I can`t know how long was the speech last. In addition the video is obviously edtited. Therefore I can't say he's using too many fillers for his speech time.

  7. Hi, Matt.

    Video1
I realized that I should pay more attention to the back of the audience. In my previous presentation, I moved my eyes only horizontally and paid no attention to them. I am sorry that it is just where Matt was sitting. I really want to improve both eye contact and gestures for the next presentation.

    Video2
It is a very funny video. To be sure, he used fillers many times, but I think they are indispensable in order to make the speech sound natural. If I were forbidden to use them, I would speak like a robot. I want to think about the appropriate frequency of using fillers in the next class.

  8. Hi,matt.

Im very interested in both two videos.

    video1
When I speak in front of many people,Im be under
very extreme tention. So always my gesture become
very robotic. It is very unnatural ,so nexttime
I try to use natural gesutures.

    video2

Before I watched this video,I think filler is improper because using it is not fluent. But I realize it is important for good speach.Im very glad to know it.

  9. Hi,Matt.

    Video1
When I make a speech in front of many people, I often forget the audience sitting at the back. Besides, I cannot use gestures. I learned how impotant to make eye contact and gestures to improve the speech.

    Video2
I was surprised at the video. How often Obama said "Uh"! But I think he used fillers in a natural way. His speech was not strange.

  11. Hi, Matt!

    Video 1
I learned that eye contact and hand gestures are tools to make a speech good. When I gave a speech, I forgot about these things because I concentrated only on speaking. So, I want to use these things more!

    Video 2
I don't think Obama uses too many fillers. This video is edited to entertain I think, but his real speech is not strange.

  12. Hi, Matt!

    Video 1
I learned that eye contacts and natural gestures are crucial for a good speech.
In the last presentation I gave in class, I must have looked nervous and a little weird because of my unnatural appearance. This video made me wish to improve my skill of eye contacts and gestures.

    Video 2
I assume Barak Obama's "Uh" is not so annoying in the actual speeches. In this video, his "Uh" is exaggerated just in order to tease him. So, I think his fillers are okay.

I learned that I should use gestures only on the important part of speeches.I had used gestures almost constantly so far.

    Video2
If the speech was not so logical and interesting,I can't help minding his fillers and think the speaker is not smart. But if the speech was imaginative and entertaining,I don't mind his fillers.

  14. Hi Matt!

    VIDEO 1
I learned that it is important to use both hands when I use gestures. Gestures are useful to emphasize what is important in your speech. It is also important to make an eye contact to everyone listening to your speech.

    VIDEO 2
I thought that Obama used fillers many times. However, he did that in a natural way and I feel the video is clearly edtited. So, I can't say that he used too many fillers in his speech and that is bad from only this video.

    Video1
I learned from this video that I should use both hands to make gestures, and use gestures to emphasize important parts of a speech.

    Video2
I learned that Barak Obama uses many and many fillers. The speech sounded awkward. But,if it hadn't been editted to exaggerate the number of his using fillers,it would sound fluent, and I want to listen to his "real" speech.

  16. Hi,Matt.

Video1:When we make a speech,we must look at the entire room.We should give eye contacts to people on each side, and show them that the speaker is interested in them.
Also,we have to pay attention to gestures, especially hands. We have to think how to use hands in a more effective way.

Video2:It is true that he uses many many fillers in his speech. However, I don't know it was TOO many, because I don't know the length of his speech. Also he uses them very naturally and just seems to choose his words carefully in order not to say wrong one. So, I don't think it was too much.

I'm looking forward to talking with you,Matt!

  17. Hi Matt.

VIDEO1: From that video, I learned how important gestures and eye contact are. We should look at all people who are listening to our speech; people in front, right and left side of us, and back of the room. Gesture can make our speech more professional. It should be used naturally.

VIDEO2:I have listened to President Obama's speech on TV before. However, at that time I wasn't annoyed at his use of fillers. VIDEO2 was edited funnily, so I don't think he uses fillers too many.

  18. Hello.

VIDEO1:I realized that I have done many mistakes in the last presentation.I should have used gestures smoothly and done eye-contact with the whole audience. The man in this video explains how to make the presentation better.I will try to do what I have learned in the next.

VIDEO2:Many people including him(Obama) usually use fillers in speech or conversation.I have noticed that many teachers or proffesors frequently say "uh" in their lectures.I think this is so natural that these fillers don't make audience unconfortable unless speakers use too much fillers.

I learned that eye contacts and gestures were very important to speak in front of many people. In the last my presentation, I tried to make eye contacts, but I didn't use gestures at all. So I want to learn to use gestures in your class tomorrow.

    Video2
This video emphasizes Obama's fillers, so it seems to me that he used many fillers. However, if I listened whole his talk, I may not think he used too many fillers. I think it doesn't matter that speaker uses fillers properly. Fillers are necessary to make a speech smoothly.

    Video2
I can't say president Obama used too many fillers in his speech, because I don't know how long the speech was.

I learned the eye contact and the gesture should be natural, not mechanical. My eye contact and gesture may be mechanical, so I want to be abe to gesture naturally.

    VIDEO 2

  27. Hello Mat!!
From the first video I learned not to focus on once side of the audience and also, using your gesture effectivelly.
I thought it kind of strange that the man said that putting one hand in your pocket is a sign of a casual moment in your speech, because I thought it is a rude gesture to do.

In the next video, I thought that president Obama is saying `eh` too much.
I got confused of what he was saying in the first part of the video.

  28. Hello.

    Video1
What I learned from this video is that in giving speech,it is important to make eye contacts with all the audience equally and make gestures naturally. These things seem very basic things in general conversation.
However,in giving sppech,we tend to get nervous
and find it difficult to do these things.
So I think it takes a lot of experience to give speech in a perfect way.
However,I'll follow the man's advice and do my best in the next presentation.

    Video2
This video puts too much emphasis on Obama's fillers and I think it was a little exaggerated.Besides,I couldn't hear the whole presentation,so I can't judge whether he uses too many fillers or not only from this video.
However,I think if used in a proper way, fillers
can be very effective in giving speech.Fillers can add individuality and savor to one's speech.

  29. Hi Matt!!

Video1:The most informative thing I learned from this video is that I should make gestures flow naturally.I will be careful about not making gestures too much which may distract listeners.

    Video2:very very funny video!!
I think the number of fillers is a little large, but it depends on the length of speeches, so it's ok!

    Anyway,

    Video 1
I learned from the video that when you make a speech, you should make eye contacts with every listener, and that you should use gestures naturally, not like a robot.

    Video 2
I...am not sure. This video emphasizes Obama's "Uh" too much and doesn't show how long the speech between each "Uh" is. However, if I could use fillers in effective ways, I think I can give a good speech like making a conversation.

    Video1
I learnt that looking around the room and making eye-contact are very important so that we can show our interest in audience.Indeed, I felt a bit sad when speakers did't look the side where I was.So improving this point will surely make our presentation much better.

    Video2
I am not sure the president Obama uses fillers too much, because wi don't know how often others use fillers exactly.Even if he used fillers too much,it is much better to speak carefully by using them than speak imprudently by speaking too fluently.

  33. Hi, Matt!

I think I can't do these things now. So I want to try in the next class!

    Video1
From this video, I learned both eye contact and gesture must be natural. Calculated gesture can block off the speech. We should behave as we think all listeners are equally important.

    Video2

  34. Hi.

    video1
I learned a lot from it.
First, casual flow of eyes is very important.Because I apt to forget to look at people in front of the class,I should be careful next time.
Second,I can tell important points by using gesture.moving of hand should be natural.

    video2
I was surprised to see it.Although I know it is edited,he uses too many 'uh'.
I watched other relevant videos. He maybe using many fillers, when there is no teleprompter....

  35. Hi Matt.

I learned that behaving naturally is most important in public speaking from video 1.

It is true that to try to speak friendly and make eye contact deliverately is necessary, but just talking to everyone in a natural way is more significant, I think.

I think Barack Obama didn`t use too many fillers.

On the contrary,I felt a little bit angry to tv caster, because he made a fool of Obama.

Obama is very respectful person for me.

He always makes persuasive and intelligible speeches for us.

  36. Hi Matt!!

    Video 1
It is very important to make equal and constant eye contact with all of your audience because the action makes them aware that they are listener and keep concentrating on your speech.
Gestures are also important. The natural flow of gestures gives savor to your performance.

    Video 2

I do not know he used too many fillers in his speech because it depens on how long he spoke. However, the video did not show it.So I cannot jugde whether he used too many fillers or not.

  37. Hi Matt,

    VIDEO 1

I learned that it is better for us to use gestures in order to let the audience know that this is important.

    VIDEO 2

I couldn't help laughing at this video. I thought president Obama used too many fillars. But I can't make a hasty judgement because I don' know how long the speech is.

  40. Hi,Matt.
Thank you for your ideas for English,American or Australian dishes last week:)
    We're choosing our menu now.

    I watched the videos.

    VIDEO1
When I presentated at your class,I coudn't make eye contacts well.I did see someone but I didn't see the others:(
After watching this video,I think that I should have looked at everyone in the class.
And I also know the importance of gestures. However I have a question.
When people are at a loss for words, they often use gestures like stirring, right?I want to know what does the man think about this gesture. Will people who are listening the speech pay attention as well as other gestures?

    VIDEO2
I think when a speaker makes long loooong fillers like "well.....um......uh......." in a speech,he or she will make a poor impression on listeners.
But,if the fillers aren't long,I think there aren't any problems.
It is impossible to make a speech without any fillers,so I think Obama's fillers are natural.

    See you later~;D
