Ice-breaker Speech

Next class we will prepare an ice-breaker speech. It should be about 2 minutes long (one or three is ok!) and the topic is about YOU! Here are some ideas for your speech:

-Year by Year (tell about your life from birth until today)
-Your Interests (tell about what you love)
-Common Theme (what is something that constantly happens in your life?)
-Key Event (tell about an important event in your life)
-How I Got Here (talk about decisions and events that got you to TUFS)

Also, click HERE to watch a video of an ice-breaker speech. Then write a comment on our blog about what you liked about her speech.

  1. Hi Matt!

I watched the video. The speaker was talking about what happend in her life, especially about what she did through her life. I was very impressed because she keeps learning new things and enjoys them. I also thought she is good at giving a speach because her eye contact and gestures were very nice. Playing music at the beginning of the speach had a very big impact.
In the next class, I think I will talk about my interests.

    See you next week!

  2. Hi, Matt!

Her speech was a lot of fun:)
I was impressed that she enjoyed happenings in her life and changing her career.
Also, I liked some points of her way of speech.
First, she spoke in a happy tone and smiled at her audience with eye contact. I think this made them to feel inclined to listen to her.
Secondly, she played the violin at the beginning of her speech. By her performance, the audience could have an idea about what she was going to tell.

I'm very glad to meet you because I heard your class was very interesting and enjoyable!

    See you next time:)

  3. Hi, Matt!!!!
I really enjoyed today's class after the long long vabation! Thank you so much!

And now I want to write some comments about her speech.
The most impressive point for me was the content of the speech. I was impressed by her career and her enjoying the changes.
And there were many good points about the way of giving a speech, too. Her violin performance at the beginning was very attractive, her eye contact was good enough, and her voice was clear enough, too.

I want to make as an attractive speech as hers next time!!!

Anyway, I'll do my best for this semester, too!

    See you next time, Matt!

  5. Hi, Matt.

I watched the video, and felt that the her playing made the audience comfortable, so I understood an ice-breaker.

I especially paid attention to her gesture, because my freind, he was an international student, said 'Your gesture is too much.'
So I watched her gesture and found that she did an appropriate gesture and never waste.

I'll try to do like her in the next presentation.

    See you next week!

  6. Hi Matt!!

What I liked the most about her ice-breaker speech was that she talked very confidently.
She did not stop or say "um" and "you know..." much, so I was very comfortable with her speech. She used many gestures and I liked it too.

She also used music to entertain the audience.I think it is a good idea to get attention.By doing that, audience will not get bored!

    See you next week!

  7. Hi,Matt.

I had to watch the video several times before I could make out what she says.
My listening skills were somewhat ruined by the long vacation...

    Anyway, I enjoyed her speech.
But I think it is her wonderful life and way of thinking that enable her to speak like that.
I wonder whether I can give as good a speech as hers with my colorless life.

In the next class, maybe I will be talking about my interest instead.

    See you next week.

  9. Hello!

I've seen the video and the first thing I thought was that she has a good sense of humor. And her speech is nice and well-organized. I think these elements are important to make the speech interesting and keep listener's attention.

    See you soon.

  10. Hello,Matt

Changes can encourage us doing something. And I felt it is also important to continue doing one thing.

A memorable thing in her speach was her smile. She's always smiley through her speach. I think it gives good impression to the audience.

  12. Hello.

Though I was a little surprised when she begun to speak French, her speech was so nice; good eyecontact, posture, voice and the performance of the violin. But, more than that, I had interest in her story itself. Her life was full of variety, and I think she went through those things very well. That's why she looked very confident while speaking.

Like her, I want to challenge and experience many diffrent things in my life.

  15. Hi,Matt!

I also watched the video, and I enjoyed it.
Her eye contact was very good and I was impressed, so I want to give more eye contacts like her in my speech.

Also I was influenced by her thinking that she likes a change.

  16. Hi, Matt!

I think she succeeded to attract her audience's attention by playing the violin.

Most people tend to feel nervous when they meet a stranger.
So, most of the audience might feel nervous.
But the sound of violin could unwind them
though she was a stranger to them.

That's a good example of "ice breaking."

    I can't play any instruments,
So I can't entertain my classmates like her.

But I don't have to worry
because I believe there have already been no "ice" to break among T2 class Lol

    See you next week.

  17. Hi, Matt!

I watched the video of an ice-breaker speech.

I liked how Betsy captured the audience's attention by playing the violin at the beginning of her speech.
Also, she mixed some jokes into her speech so that the audience wouldn't be bored.

I would like to use some of the tips I learned in my speech too.

    See you on Tuesday!!

  18. Hi, Matt. Long time no see!

Her speech was nice. She started her speech with speaking French and playing the violin. I think these actions are good to capture the audience's attention, because her actions surprised us.
Besides, she was very expressive. This prevents the audience from being boring.

I'm going to think about some actions that can surprise you.

  19. Hi, Matt!!

I watched the video and thought she was really a entertainer. She was trying several means to attract her audience's attention. Her joke during her speech was very effective, and especially, I was moved by her performance of the violin. I don't know what the piece is, but isn't it an Irish music? I like it.

    Oh, It's already Monday...
    See you tomorrow!

  20. Hi, Matt!

I watched the video and I impressed with her speech. Her speech with a smile and jokes is attractive. Thanks to this, I could give attention to her almost continuously.

In addition, her performance of violin had a big impact and I wanted to know about her for it.

I would like to give a speech like her, but I have no confidence and skill...anyway, I want to challenge!

See you in the next class!

  21. Hi Matt!
    Do you enjoy this holidays?
We will hold a sampling party today for Gaigosai festival*
I'll cook clam chowder so please buy it~~:D
It must be veeeeeeeeery delicious!!!(Ha ha!)

By the way, I watched the video.
I think the opening is good because she becomes the object of attention by playing the violin.
And she doesn't use words like "Ah..." or "Well..." so the speech is smooth.
Sometimes however, Because of it, I think her speech is little fast.

    See you tomorrow!

  22. Hi, Matt.
I'm glad to see you in second term, too!

The woman in the video has a lot of nice points. I like her joyful smile. :) She plays violin at the beginning of her speech. I think that catches listener's attention very well. Her gesture and spontaneity were also very good. That's what I have to learn from her speech.

    See you tomorrow,

  23. Hi,Matt.
My class mates are talking about many good posture and way she speak so I have to propose another point.
Through out her speech she got audience's laugh for she gave funny contents. In fact I did not understand what she was saying word by word but noticed that she made puns. For example while she said "saving band" it meant two things;trading bond and musical band.
I thought that what your topic is to make audience laugh is one of effective ways of keeping listeners awake.

  24. Hi,Matt!!

    I like her emotion.
She was always smiling so I could enjoy her speach very much. I think facial expression is one of the keys for good speach.

Also, her use of silence was good. Although the speed of her speach was a little fast for me, I could continue listening because of good silence.
    I want be like her!

    See you tomorrow:)

  25. Hi, Matt!

I think there are three good points in her speech. First, her speech begin with playing the violin. It can attract attention from the beginning. Second, she uses gestures in places. We don't get bored visually. Third, her speech is entirely smooth. It's very comfortable to hear.

    See you the next class!

  26. Hi, Matt.
I watched the video, and I grasped an ice-breaker speech. Her speech had many points that I should learn. She kept smiling while speaking and she told the audience her life vividly. Appropriate poses between sentences were also comfortable to me.
However, an ice-breaker speech seems difficult because I'm not good at speaking English. I'll try my best anyway.

  27. Hi, Matt!!

    I watched the video.
I was impressed not only by the content but also by the delivery. First she always tries to smile and make gestures. These are important points for "ice-breaking speech", I think, because these make the speaker seem approachable. Secondly, she makes eye contact with audience. Eye contact makes communication smooth, and speech is also a type of communication. The content of the speech is wii be transmitted more efficiently.

See you next time:-) ...Oh, that's tomorrow.

  29. Hi,Matt!!!

    I watched the video!!
Though I couldn't hear what she said at some points, but I think her speech was pretty well.

At first,I was surprised at her playing the violin suddenly. It was very attractive and I learned a first impact is important.

Also, I liked her way of giving a speech. She was always confident, making big voice, using gestures, keeping eyecontact and telling humorously not to bore listners.
I think these things are very important to give a good speech, and as for me, it is harder to make a speech humorously.

I haven't decided contents of speech, but I will try not to make boring sppech.

    See you tomorrow!

  31. There's one thing that impressed me. It is laughing. Laughing relaxes atmosphere on many occasions. Especially in the speech like in this video, laughing breaks the nervousness of not only the audience but also the speaker. She successes on this point, and consequently she takes control of the room, and it makes the speech a good one.

  32. Hi, Matt.

Her speech is full of contents we learned in your class in the former semester.

I like her way of making audience laugh. Unfortunately, I have no stories about my life that can make people laugh.
But even if I can't make audience laugh, I'll try not to make my speech uninteresting or tedious.

  33. Hi Matt.
How to ice-break is a big problem always around me because I am shy around strangers. But now I got some tips of ice-breaking from this video. I think the video tells an important thing to ice-break is to attract the audience at first. Her playing violin at the beginning of the video was such a successful strategy of ice breaking.

    I'll see you tomorrow.

  34. Hello Matt!

    Her speech was very intriguing.
As I love French, when she started talking in French, that much could satisfy me!
Though I could not understand what ice-breaking speech is to be, I could make out what kind of speech we should do in tomorrow's class.
To make an eye-catching speech, eye contact is the most important and difficult factor, I think.
I like making people laugh, and I'm good at that, I think, only in the case of Japanese.
So I'm not sure whether I can amuse the class tomorrow.
    But I'll do my best!!!

I understand her performance of the violin played a role of ice-breaking.
I would like to know other ways of ice-breaking if possible.

I think it was a good point that she was making eye contact with audience.

As for contents, I agree with her in that new experiences and changes are important for our life.

  37. Hi Matt!

    I watched the video.
She is very beautiful, isn't she?
Her playing the violin with elegance and her lovely smile completely broke my ice.
I wanna get along with her.

I think one of the most important points in ice-breaking is to have his/her audiences enjoy the speech.
The violin was a good example. It was really attractive.
And smiling is also an important thing in ice-breaker speech.
She kept smiling through the speech, and she looked amiable and the audiences probably felt comfortable.

What I can imitate is to keep smiling.
I cannot play the violin, so I will show my teeth.
    Smile! Smile! Smile!
